TOPIC: Operation HUTT – Major Investigation of Paua and Crayfish poaching and tracing the Proceeds of the Crime

Pete Whiteman (Team Leader Investigations Central) and James Fitzwater (Senior Investigator) from the Ministry for Primary Industries will be presenting on the recent case involving the exploitation of the Chatham Island fisheries resources and the tracing of the proceeds gained of this activity.  The Central Area Investigations area covers the area from New Plymouth to East Cape and south to Wellington.  The pāua fishery on the Chatham Islands is the largest commercial pāua fishery in New Zealand and the under-reporting or theft threatened the sustainability of the fishery.     

Please come along to hear how the theft of precious kaimoana was conducted, the challenges experienced and the results the team at MPI achieved in helping to protect the sustainability of the fishery for future generations.
